Okuma MIVxxx-1-Bx AC Servo Drive Repair Experts

Here at Precision Zone, one of our specialties is the repair services of Okuma MIV units. One series that we often work on is the MIVxxx-1-Bx series. The MIV unit is the inverter unit within Okuma’s motion control system (MCS).

The MIVxxx indicates the rating and capacity of the servo unit. This series of drives ranges from 1kW up to 45kW of power. The MIV unit can come with one or two axis capabilities. In this case, the two-axis ratings are listed sequentially. For example, an MIV that has the first and second axes rated for 45kW, the part number would be MIV4545-1-Bx (where the last ‘x’ indicates the control ROM type). These inverters are modular and can be easily replaced for troubleshooting or removed for repair. A connection to the MPS power supply and NC control is easily accessible on the face of the drive and the motor cables connect down at the bottom of the drive.

Alarms and warnings are displayed by dual seven segment displays on the face of the drive. When the drive is a 2 axis drive, the 1st axis will be displayed with the leftmost LED and the 2nd axis will be displayed on the rightmost LED. Troubleshooting for various alarms can be found below.

This overview is Precision Zone’s basic troubleshooting process. Once our repair team starts on the job, we use specialized and customized testing fixtures, Huntron trackers, signal generators, oscilloscopes, milli and megaohm meters, as well as any other necessary tools we have available to assure quality repair work. Most importantly, every repair is fully tested in our custom-built simulators under load with a motor to replicate real-life working environment.

Precision Zone goes as far as using heating chambers and overnight dynamic testing, when applicable, to guarantee performance of the repaired product when it arrives back with the customer.

Repair Process for Okuma MIVxxx-1-Bx Servo Drives

Visual Overview

When conducting a visual check, the technician inspects the drive for any mechanical damage to the drive itself and any printed circuit boards (PCB). The technician then proceeds to verify connections are tight and correct inside the drive and there are no loose screws, wires or debris. Additionally, the unit is checked for any burn marks on the components, PCBs or chassis. During the visual inspection, excessive dirt on cooling components is noted as well as the functionality of the heat sink.

Basic Static Check

Input Module Testing

Input testing is primarily done with the power supply unit. In this modular, bus-linked style communication, the servos and spindle units take power off a shared bus.

Output Module Testing

Using a multimeter, the output protection circuitry can be checked. It is important to make sure there are no dead shorts to ground on any output. Additionally, it is crucial to see proper, balanced output across the 3 phases. For the readings below, set the multimeter to the diode function and measure across the indicated bus terminals and outputs.
